The original corn mill known as Abbey Mill was built during the early middle ages and probably belonged to the Abbey up until the Reformation (1560). The existing mill, the bottom half of which is original, was built around 1640. It then supplied the Abbey brewery with roasted barley. The first recorded owner of the present mill was James Fletcher Hoy. The mill was never commercially viable purely because the water-flow was insufficient to drive more than one millstone. The mill escaped serious damage during the Borders Wars and in 1773 the upper floor was added.
We are pleased to discuss the finer points of the mill history with visitors – you only have to ask!
